I think the most important thing, that makes a tree storm-safe is not the diameter of the trunk, but its structure and flexibility. A coconut tree is more storm-safe than a mango tree, although the trunk diameter of a mango tree is longer. The trunk structure of the coconut tree provides a flexibility that makes it easily bent by a storm without being broken, while the trunk structure of the mango tree gives it a rigidity, which the storm could easily break.
